Waterwheel Street Pedestrian Walkway

Summary

This project will convert the northern portion of Waterwheel Street, a natural boulevard into a crush surface pedestrian walkway. This walkway will provide residents and tourists a safe access to Tuey Park, a popular public beach and off-leash dog park.

Project Overview

Tuey Park is a popular public beach and off-leash dog park which sees a large volume of park users, particularly throughout the summer months. Tuey Park is accessed via Waterwheel Street, which sees a high volume of pedestrian traffic during the summer months as residents and tourists access the park.

The northern 240 m of Waterwheel Street, which provides direct access to Tuey Park, is unpaved. A natural boulevard is located on the west side of Waterwheel Street, which provides an area for pedestrians to travel. However, as a result of the constrained boulevard width (proximate to a barbed wire fence), uneven boulevard surface, and organic surface accumulation, the area has become less useful for pedestrians, with most choosing to walk on the travelled lanes of the street instead, which poses a significant hazard for pedestrians.

The City of Enderby will convert the natural boulevard into a pedestrian walkway by removing the top layer of organic material and the placing/grading 3/4” crush surfacing. The proposed 240 m pedestrian walkway will provide pedestrian connectivity between Tuey Park and the most proximate.
