The project will update an existing mid-block crossing to increase safety for all users. It will consist of extending the curb line and boulevard out to reduce the travel distance for pedestrians and adding thermoplastic crosswalk markings to improve their visibility. This narrowing of the roadway will enhance safety through increased sightlines, decreased crossing distance and reduced vehicular speeds.
The Turner Creek 21 St NE Mid-block Crossing is located on an urban Collector Road with an ambient traffic speed greater than 60km/h. The road is approximately 4 lanes wide and on a curve in the roadway. The crossing is well lit, but sightlines are poor due to the road geometry. The crossing is within 400 meters of the Okanagan College campus and along a route to school for students attending Bastion Elementary. It is an essential connector along the Cress Creek Trail system which connects the local high school to many residential neighborhoods. While there have been no documented incidents, the City has received concerns from the public due to drivers not stopping at the crosswalk.
