Traffic Monitoring for Enhanced School Safety

Summary

As part of the District of North Vancouver Safe Routes to School and Pedestrian Infrastructure programs, this project supports Vision Zero’s goal of improving road safety by collecting and analyzing traffic data outside 20 public elementary schools. Using two Miovision Traffic Cameras, we monitored traffic flow, driver behaviour, and pedestrian interactions. Over the course of the 2025-2026 school year, we conducted road safety interviews, walkabouts, and one week of video monitoring at each public elementary school in the District.

The data collected provides insights into near misses and hazardous conditions, enabling the development of a comprehensive school road safety report and prioritized school zone improvement infrastructure project list. Upon its release, this report will include safety scores and school-specific recommendations to enhance pedestrian safety. This work will help to create safer school zones across the District.
