This project will install a high-visibility thermoplastic zebra crosswalk and a flashing crosswalk beacon at the intersection of Government Street and 3rd Avenue to facilitate the elimination of conflict between drivers and vulnerable road users.
The Village of Burns Lake’s new active transportation route and multi-use pathway from Government Street (just before the Highway 16 intersection) through to Gilgan Road (which links to Highway 35) is a vital corridor for connecting residents with community services. This route includes a dedicated pedestrian space providing access to residential areas, as well as two seniors’ facilities, two Early Years Programs, a Head Start on Reserve Early Years Program, the Ts’il Kaz Koh First Nation’s urban Band Office, the local high school and the College of New Caledonia.
The intersection at Government Street and 3rd Avenue presents a potential environment for conflict between motorists and pedestrians, including those with scooters and other mobility devices. To increase driver awareness, improve the visibility of vulnerable road users, and decrease motorist speeds on this important the Village of Burns Lake is proposing the implementation of a High-visibility Thermoplastic Zebra Crosswalk application and a Flashing Crosswalk Beacon mounted on its own pole.
