Skowkale First Nation will install a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) crosswalk at the north end of the new ts'lhimexósem trail, near the intersection of Chilliwack River Road and Sq’ewilem Road. The installation of an enhanced-safety crosswalk here is intended to provide a safer and highly visible crossing point for community members and trail users, enhancing their ability to access the trail and connect with other active transportation networks.
There is currently no safe way for people walking to cross Chilliwack River Road at this location. There are a growing number of pedestrian traffic generators here, including a new housing development, the Skowkale Childcare Centre, the Health and Wellness Centre, with more community amenities planned. Consequently, the number of people needing to cross at this location is expected to increase significantly, making a safe designated crossing essential. Unfortunately, this section of Chilliwack River Road continues to experience significant issues with speeding vehicles, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians. As Ilesha Maharaj, S.A.Y. Lands Office Stewardship Coordinator, explains,
“Members of the Land Stewardship Team frequently need to cross this busy section of Chilliwack River Road to access project sites. Unfortunately, the road is often treated like a racetrack, with many drivers ignoring the posted speed limit. This makes crossing extremely dangerous. Several times vehicles have appeared suddenly after initially being unseen due to excessive speed, resulting in near misses. This designated highly visible crosswalk will provide a much-needed safe crossing point, allowing our team to access our worksites without constantly fearing for our safety.”
The success of the RRFB crosswalk at the other end of the trail has already demonstrated improvements in driver behavior and pedestrian safety, and the Skowkale First Nation wants to see these safety benefits adopted more widely across their community.
