Project Overview

The City of New Westminster is responding to resident concerns about pedestrian safety and truck traffic on Princess Street between Sixth Street and Eighth Street by undertaking a set of significant safety improvements along this street. The City is committed to fostering a safer street environment for its residents. This section of Princess Street is well used by people walking, with people of all ages and abilities traversing this corridor. People living in the towers along Princess Street, particularly seniors, cross Princess Street to access Royal City Centre. There are also daycares and bus routes near this block of Princess Street. along Princess Street.

The City will be making a number of changes as part of the comprehensive street treatment, including:

  • Adding a curb bulge, raised crosswalk, and better signage to improve visibility for pedestrians.
  • Installing speed humps and replacing missing speed limit signs to slow traffic.

Specifically, this Vision Zero funding will be used to install a raised crosswalk at the desire line crossing Princess Street at the Save On Foods entrance to Royal City Centre, improving pedestrian safety at this high-use mid-block crossing point, and supporting efforts to foster a safer and more comfortable walkable neighbourhood.
