Our goal was to improve pedestrian safety at the First & Birch intersection. We have achieved that by implementing a plan prepared by a traffic engineer, designed to reduce the length of time pedestrians need to spend in crosswalk/roadway areas and slow and force vehicles further into the centre of the intersection before making turn movements.
In mid 2023, the District of 100 Mile House completed an Active Transportation Network Plan. This plan made Pedestrian Crossing Improvement Program recommendations. Infrastructure/Intersection Improvements at Birch Avenue and First Street were classified as high priority. The District engaged a Traffic Engineer to conduct an assessment and prepare an intersection safety design to improve pedestrian safety using paint lines and other low-cost infrastructure. The design was implemented in late September 2025.
