Neskonlith Band - Switzmalph Daycare Road Safety

Summary

The 60 km/h traffic speed beside the Switzmalph Daycare forces staff and children to walk along the road, creating significant safety risks for vulnerable young pedestrians. This project will build an off‑road walking path that provides a safer route to nearby destinations and supports healthy, confident walking for infants, children, and caregivers.

Project Overview

Our community is concerned about the safety of infants, children, and caregivers due to the 60 km/h traffic speed on the road beside the Switzmalph Daycare. Children are vulnerable road users because of their smaller size, unpredictable movements, and limited ability to judge vehicle speed and distance. The daycare staff often walk with children to nearby destinations, but currently must do so along the road, increasing the risk of collisions and injuries.

This project will create an off‑road walking path that leads toward nearby community destinations, providing a much safer route for all users. It will also strengthen connections to key locations, making it easier and safer for infants, children, and caregivers to participate in walking and physical activity.

Walking — whether in a stroller or hand‑in‑hand with a trusted adult — is animportant early form of transportation and a key skill children develop overtime. To help them become safe, confident walkers, adults must understand how children perceive traffic, how they learn, and how their abilities evolve. The new path will support this development by offering a safe, predictable space for children to practice essential walking skills.
