Lickman Park & Ride Crosswalk Upgrade

Summary

This project will install a rapid rectangular flashing beacon crosswalk at the Lickman Park and Ride. The goal is to improve pedestrian visibility, increase driver compliance, and increase transit ridership at this stop.

Project Overview

This project will install a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at the crosswalk fronting the Lickman Park and Ride. The crosswalk crosses Yale Road West, which is classified as a minor arterial road and is located in the industrial zoned area of the city.

The crosswalk was installed specifically for the bus stop servicing users of the 66 - Fraser Valley Express Bus, which connects Chilliwack with Abbotsford, Langley, and the Skytrain in Burnaby. It is an extremely well-used bus service that, since its inception in 2015/2016, has continued to have immense success. The level of driver yield compliance at the crosswalk is low, and there are concerns about the potential for pedestrian injury at this location given vehicle speeds along this part of Yale Road, the increasing volume of transit users, and the fact that some users of this transit service are visually impaired.

The goal of this project is to improve pedestrian visibility and increase driver compliance to make a safer, more comfortable environment for people wanting to use transit at this stop. One anticipated co-benefit of this project is to support increased transit ridership at this location.
