Kitimat RRFB Crosswalk Upgrades 2025

Summary

This project will upgrade the pedestrian crosswalks at Kuldo Boulevard and Alexander Avenue, with rapid rectangular flashing beacons (RRFBs).

Project Overview

This project is the continuation to our 2023 Kitimat RRFB Crosswalk Upgrades project which was funded by the BC Vision Zero in Road Safety Program. The project received positive feedback from both pedestrians and motorists, to the extend that our community would want to see more of these units installed on other crossings throughout town.

Kitimat's Active Transportation Plan (ATP) identified the need to supplement 11 existing crosswalks with RRFB systems as a medium to enhance critical locations in the municipality's pedestrian network, and hence, reduce safety concerns among the public. Nine out of eleven crosswalks have already been upgraded with RRFB technology, with Kuldo-Alexander and Ptarmigan-Haisla crossing sites remaining. The Kuldo-Alexander crosswalk is a concerning location because it the start point of a residential zone. It divides between a 60-km/h road and a 50-km/h road, so motorists need to transition speeds before reaching the crosswalk.

The District of Kitimat will upgrade two existing pedestrian crosswalk, at the intersection between Kuldo Boulevard and Alexander Avenue, with rapid rectangular flashing beacons. The primary goal of this project is to strengthen road safety and encourage active transportation within our community, which is expected to be achieved through the enhancement of pedestrian detection/visibility, walkability, and security.
