The City of Langford is committed to making neighbourhood improvements in the municipality so people can access safe walking, biking and rolling infrastructure. Community feedback has consistently highlighted the need for safer school zones so children and their families can feel confident about choosing active transportation as their primary mode of travel.
This section of Jacklin Road is a local road that carries both commuter and local traffic and approximately 1,800 vehicles perday with an 85th percentile speed of 43 km/h despite being in a school zone. These conditions create safety risks for vulnerable road users, particularly children traveling to Ruth King Elementary School which is located directly adjacent to this corridor.
While sidewalks exist on both sides of the street, there is no dedicated cycling infrastructure and only limiting safe and reliable alternative travel routes available for school-aged children and their parents or caregivers. This gap discourages active transportation and forces families to rely on vehicles, which, in turn, contributes to congestion, carbon production and further increases the risk of injuries from yet more vehicles.
These project improvements, designed by a professional engineering consultant, will reduce speeds and volumes, enhance safety for vulnerable road users and create a more inviting environment for active transportation users. Each of these changes directly responds to community priorities and supports provincial road safety and climate action goals. Additionally,these improvements will address key travel challenges identified in the Capital Regional District’s Active and Safe Routes to School Travel Plan Report completed in 2018 for Ruth King Elementary.
