Hope Walk 'n' Roll

Summary

The Hope Walk ‘n’ Roll project encourages students and families in the District of Hope to choose active ways of getting to school - whether by walking, biking, or rolling - while fostering safer, healthier, and more connected school communities.

Originally launched as the Hope Bike Bus, the project was adapted to better meet the needs of local students and families. By broadening the focus beyond biking alone, the Hope Walk ‘n’ Roll makes active travel more accessible for everyone, regardless of distance or ability.

Project Overview

In October 2025, the project’s first pilot week took place at Coquihalla Elementary and Silver Creek Elementary.

  • At Coquihalla, our Bike Bus exceeded expectations with 25–35 daily participants and a 52% reduction in car drop-offs during the week.
  • At Silver Creek, students took part in the “Travel the Sto:lo” challenge - walking or rolling the equivalent distance from Hope to the ocean along the Fraser River - creating a fun, place-based approach to active travel.

To support safe participation and increase accessibility, 300 helmets and 100 sets of elbow and knee pads were distributed to students across both schools. In addition, Active School Travel Maps were developed for each school to highlight safe routes and encourage families to travel actively year-round.

This flexible, community-driven model ensures activities reflect the unique needs of each school while maintaining a shared goal: reducing school zone traffic and improving safety.

Looking ahead, the Spring 2026 phase will build on the pilot’s momentum with expanded community outreach, safety education, and collaborative planning with parents, teachers, and local organizations. Activities may include new bike safety lessons, a bike rodeo or bike maintenance day, and community campaigns such as the Think of Me campaign.

Our Goals

  • Reduce morning traffic congestion in school zones to create safer streets.
  • Increase participation in active and safe travel options.
  • Build public awareness of the health and environmental benefits of active travel.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of community-led school travel initiatives in rural settings.

By walking, biking, and rolling together, we’re helping Hope’s youngest residents arrive at school healthier, safer, and ready to learn.
