The project goal is to install pedestrian-activated, solar-powered crossing lights to add to a crosswalk in the Hans Helgesen Elementary School school zone. The crosswalk, which is currently unlighted, crosses Rocky Point Road.
Metchosin is a rural community bordered by the Sc'ianew Nation, as well as East Sooke. Elementary school age children of the these communities attend Hans Helgesen School and soon, families will be able access child care options at the new facility.
With increasing pedestrian traffic, the District of Metchosin received a Vision Zero grant in 2023 to create a new crosswalk with line painting and signs on Rocky Point Road, a busy main artery. Rocky Point is a busy road that can be dangerous due to hilly terrain, speeding drivers, and a blind curve right before the school zone. Metchosin is a rural community, and there is no street lighting on the road or surrounding area. A crossing guard is available at school times, but not during after-school events. This project aims to enhance the existing crosswalk by installing a pedestrian-activated, solar-powered lights to improve pedestrian safety and driver visibility, particularly in the dark hours of winter.
