This project will work to improve school zone safety and encourage active travel at McMillan Elementary, W.A. Fraser Middle and Yale Secondary schools. Planned activities include walkabouts, developing best routes to school maps, road safety education, drive-to-5 locations, and walking school buses.
This project aims to create safer school zones and promote healthy habits by addressing road safety concerns and initiating actions to encourage and increase active travel to and from McMillan Elementary, W.A. Fraser Middle and Yale Secondary Schools in Abbotsford. Because these three schools are all located near each other, this project will leverage the potential value of a multi-site “system” approach to the shared problem of school-generated motor vehicle traffic, congestion, and risks to non-vehicular road users.
Project activities will include walkabouts, developing best routes to school maps, road safety education, drive-to-5 locations, walking school buses, and offering incentives and resources to students and caregivers who wish to try walking or rolling to or from school. The project will pilot a collaborative active school travel initiative in partnership with organizations including Fraser Health, ICBC, local policing, the City of Abbotsford, and each school’s Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) and the District PAC, in addition to families and caregivers themselves.
