The Village of Gingolx is undertaking a project through the BC Vision Zero Grant to support the planning and preliminary design of safer pedestrian infrastructure, beginning with Broad Street. Building on route identification and site visits completed through the community’s Active Transportation Plan, the project will develop preliminary sidewalk concepts and outline potential safety improvements such as lighting, crossings, and accessibility features. The goal is to identify practical options to improve pedestrian safety for residents, including Elders and people with mobility challenges.
Gingolx is a small, remote community where many residents walk to access homes, services, and gathering places. However, the lack of dedicated pedestrian infrastructure means people often share the roadway with vehicles, creating safety concerns. Limited lighting and poor visibility during the coastal winter months can further increase these risks.
Through engagement completed for the Comprehensive Community Plan, community members identified pedestrian safety as a priority, particularly along Broad Street, which serves as a key corridor connecting homes, services, and community spaces. This project will build on previous work completed through the community’s Active Transportation Plan, including route identification and site visits. The project will focus on the development of preliminary sidewalk design concepts that outline potential safety improvements such as lighting, crossings, and accessibility considerations. The outcome will help the Village better understand options for improving pedestrian safety and support future planning and funding efforts for safer walking routes in the community.
