Ford Road and 190A Street RRFB Crossing Improvement

Summary

The project will increase pedestrian safety by installing a rectangular rapid flashing beacon crosswalk on Ford Road and 190A Street. This crosswalk is on an arterial road that connects the rural section of Pitt Meadows to the urban section and is a prioritized location based on both staff analyses and feedback received from residents.

Project Overview

The project is intended to increase the safety of the crosswalk by installing a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) to the crosswalk to increase the visibility of pedestrians and improve driver yield compliance.

The need to upgrade the crosswalk at this location was determined by City staff through a crosswalk prioritization matrix; the results of this analysis conducted by City staff aligns with feedback received from community engagements where this location was identified by residents as a location of concern.

Ford Road is an arterial road and experiences high volumes of traffic. This section of Ford Road is on a bus route and the crossing at 190A Street is within a 500m radius of major urban facilities such as day care facilities, retirement senior homes, medical facilities, restaurants, commercial shops, co-op housing, other low- and high-density residential housing. By installing an RRFB on the crosswalk, the City expects to increase safety for people who walk to and from these facilities. RRFBs benefit not only the general population, but people that may require longer walk times when crossing a street.
