Falcon Way Streetscape Improvement Project

Summary

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) is looking to make a number of crosswalk and speed-management improvements as part of their commitment to ensure that members live in a safe walkable community.

The measures funded through this grant align with safety priorities identified by TFN members and directly mitigate concerns related to unsafe speeds, extended pedestrian crossing distances, and visibility challenges. Specific infrastructure improvements include: a raised crosswalk near Raven Lane, a raised intersection/speed table at Falcon Way & Cormorant Drive; and high-visibility crosswalk enhancements at three additional locations.

Project Overview

Falcon Way is a central residential corridor within the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) Community Area serving elders, families, children, and other community members who walk and cycle daily to parks, community facilities, and homes. Through lengthy community engagement starting in 2021, members have consistently raised concerns about speeding, unsafe crossings, and limited visibility at key intersections. For example, vehicles traveling along the long straight segments between Tsawwassen Drive and Pheasant Lane often exceed residential speed limits.

At Falcon Way & Cormorant Drive, residents highlighted concerns about near misses at this intersection. The pedestrian crossing at Pheasant Lane and Falcon Way was felt to be unsafe for children trying to reach the play areas. Residents have repeatedly requested permanent traffic-calming features, especially speed humps, raised crossings, and improved crosswalk visibility. The presence of these permanent installations along this corridor will improve safety for all members and encourage active multimodal transportation within the community.
