The City of Coquitlam will provide a series of free or low-cost electric micro-mobility skills training and education sessions. Participants will be taught how to safely and responsibly operate e-bikes and e-scooters within the city.
The City of Coquitlam is partnering with HUB Cycling to launch an Electric Micromobility Skills Training and Education Program. With more e-scooters and e-bikes ridden in Coquitlam every day, it is important to educate riders how to ride safely and how to protect other vulnerable road users when riding in shared spaces.
Electric micromobility is a fast and relatively affordable transportation option. Incorporating electric assist expands the area in which riders can travel easily without a motor vehicle. Electric micromobility is a transportation option that has the potential to serve various marginalized populations. E-bikes and e-scooters are less strenuous to operate than traditional bicycles or scooters, providing users with physical limitations, longer commutes, and those carrying cargo a sense of agency over mobility. This is particularly impactful for populations such as older adults, parents with young children, or individuals with disabilities who may have faced barriers to micromobility previously.
This project will offer 11 free or low-cost training sessions in Coquitlam where participants will learn to ride e-bikes and e-scooters safely and responsibly, with topics such as:
The goal of the program is to instill rider confidence and safety education to keep electric micromobility users and other vulnerable road users safe, while also promoting the use of sustainable transportation. The curriculum created for this program will influence and encourage future electric micromobility training and education across the region.
