Enhancing Safety at the Prince Rupert Recreation Complex

Summary

Our goal is to improve road, vehicle, walkway/trail connections and pedestrian safety of the roadway and bus stop directly in front of the Recreation Complex. Thousands of people access the Recreation Complex on a yearly basis for sport, culture, community and recreational activities. Student also walk to school on the pathway that connects from a trail to the roadway, through a parking lot and then into school grounds.

Project Overview

The Recreation and Community Services department with support from BC Transit and SD52 are wishing to install small infrastructure improvements to the Recreation complex roadway to enhance pedestrian and transit user safety. The roadway runs right through the main entrance of the Recreation Complex and connects two trail heads as direct walking paths for students to get to Prince Rupert Middle School and to catch the bus that stops directly in front of the facility. Serving thousands of residents from all walks of life a day, the Recreation complex is accessible via bus, walking and vehicles that share a fairly narrow roadway space, and there have been safety incidents and near misses within the area fronting the facility.

The Vision Zero grant will help support improved safety for pedestrians, roadway, bus and motor vehicles. Funding is proposed to support the following:

  • Relocation of the bus stop forward to a better identified zone in front of the building, approved by BC Transit
  • Creation of a designated spot for drop-off vehicle/loading zones
  • Completion of line painting: bus zone, fire zone, accessibility stalls, do not enter areas
  • Installation of a raised cross walk
  • Line painting of a children’s inclusive rainbow cross-walk
  • Installation of road safety signs
