This project will create a safer, slower and more predictable traffic environment around Doncaster Elementary School along Cedar Hill Road by installing one or two permanent speed reader signs in partnership with the District of Saanich.
Community surveys and school feedback have consistently identified speeding and unsafe driver behaviour as primary safety concerns around the school particularly at key crossing points.
Our recent parent and community survey (yielded 87 responses) indicated that speeding along Cedar Hill Road is the number one safety concern for families. Many survey respondents also cited a lack of safe crossings, insufficient visibility near intersections and anxiety about allowing their children to walk or cycle independently due to vehicle traffic and speeding-related safety risks.
This project involves extensive collaboration with the District of Saanich to identify optimal sign locations based on traffic flow, visibility and collision-risk factors. Once implemented, we will collect pre- and post-installation traffic data (vehicle speeds and volumes); conduct follow-up community surveys to measure perceived safety improvements; and share data (including data collected by these signs) with Capital Regional District to inform progress over the next year on the Ready Step Roll Program and with the District of Saanich to inform updates to its School Travel Plan for Doncaster Elementary.
