District of Tofino Multi-Use Path Safety Improvements

Summary

The District of Tofino is experiencing significant growth in active transportation use, particularly along its multi‑use path network. With this rise in cycling, e‑bike rentals and pedestrian activity, the community faces pressing safety challenges that require a robust response. The goal of this project is to use signage, messaging, paint, education and increased compliance efforts to improve safety on this multi-use path.

Project Overview

The District of Tofino welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year including many international ones. Many are unfamiliar with the area and this can sometimes result in behaviors such as riding on the left, failing to signal or traveling at unsafe speeds. Local businesses, older adults, our Elders and many other residents have expressed concern about near‑miss incidents and the need for an array of stronger measures to protect vulnerable road users.

This project directly addresses the most urgent safety issues on Tofino’s multi‑use path by

  • Establishing a signage campaign around three key safety messages: use a bell, control your speed and keep right;
  • Using universal iconography to ensure effective messaging across all groups of people regardless of language;
  • Painting intersections, lane markings and on‑path markings to reinforce signage and improve visibility;
  • Launching an education and awareness campaign targeting bike and e‑bike rental businesses, residents and visitors; and
  • Strengthening bylaw enforcement and regular compliance monitoring, paired with consistent communication and infrastructure upgrades to support safer path use.

By implementing this project, the District of Tofinowill reduce collisions, improve user experience on this trail and advance the goal of eliminating traffic‑related fatalities and serious injuries.
