
The District of Tofino is experiencing significant growth in active transportation use, particularly along its multi‑use path network. With this rise in cycling, e‑bike rentals and pedestrian activity, the community faces pressing safety challenges that require a robust response. The goal of this project is to use signage, messaging, paint, education and increased compliance efforts to improve safety on this multi-use path.
The District of Tofino welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year including many international ones. Many are unfamiliar with the area and this can sometimes result in behaviors such as riding on the left, failing to signal or traveling at unsafe speeds. Local businesses, older adults, our Elders and many other residents have expressed concern about near‑miss incidents and the need for an array of stronger measures to protect vulnerable road users.
