District of Sicamous Traffic Calming

Summary

This project aims to address speeding in problem areas, collect speed statistics to advocate for an increased RCMP presence and to help the District determine where additional speed calming measures are needed in areas where pedestrians and other vehicles are at risk. Portable digital radar signs will be used to monitor and manage these areas, which vary in concern based on the time of year.

Project Overview

The District of Sicamous needs to address long-standing speeding issues in specific areas, as raised by the residents.

Key areas of concern include:

  1. Old Town Rd: A winding road with hidden residential driveways leading to one of the main boat launches in Sicamous. Despite a reduced speed limit of 40 km/hr, speeding and close calls remain frequent.
  2. Solsqua Road: This road leads to the industrial park, public works yard and dog park. Despite a 30 km/hr speed limit, speeding persists, and recently there was an incident involving a dog being struck and killed.
  3. Frontage roads (Maier Rd, TCH Frontage & Eagle Pass Way): These narrow roads are used to avoid highway congestion leading to increased speeding concerns, especially with highway bridge construction underway.

This project aims to strategically address these issues by maximizing limited resources through collaboration between District staff and the RCMP. To achieve these goals, we will strategically install portable radar signs at key locations, considering seasonal points of interest. We will monitor the data collected from these signs and connect with the RCMP to increase patrols during periods of concern. Additionally, we will relocate the signs based on data when issues are not observed and continuously track public reports about speeding.
