Davis Bay Elementary Crosswalk Addition

Summary

The Davis Bay Elementary Crosswalk Project is the result of hosting Road Safety Blitzes at this and other schools in collaboration with ICBC. The road safety blitz identified the lack of a crosswalk at the school, and appropriate sidewalk design to support students walking and bicycling to and from school to safely cross when arriving at their destination. Our goal is to ensure that:

  • Students and staff are safely able to cross the road at the start and end of the school day, using appropriate sidewalk, curb and crosswalk engineering
  • Drivers are enabled to better see and observe the location where crossing is expected and adjust their speed and route accordingly
  • Increase the number of student and staff who use active travel modes to and from school because the roadway and adjacent spaces are designed to enable these activities safely.

Project Overview

SD46 has conducted ICBC Road Safety Blitzes at schools since Fall 2022. At our 7thconsecutive set of blitzes - VCH and District of Sechelt staff observed the frequently dangerous and exposed conditions in which students and staff were required to cross the street in front of Davis Bay Elementary. Both drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are currently unable at that location to safely expect or judge where to cross. There is no clear sidewalk space/ bulge where students and staff can wait when crossing from the East to the West side of the road or vice versa.

The District of Sechelt has provided a letter of support and worked with community partners (VCH and Trac) and has provided engineering diagrams that outline the project need, costing and proposed design.
