Community Road Safety Plan

Summary

The purpose of this project is to make roads safer for everyone, including vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. The final deliverable will be a Community Road Safety Plan and Action Strategies, approved by Chief & Council, based on the following objectives:

  • Increased safety for non-motorized mobility
  • Measurable reduction in traffic-related incidents
  • Upgrades to infrastructure improving the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers
  • A community-wide culture of safety
  • Data-driven decision-making to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented measures and to make evidence-based adjustments

Project Overview

Stz’uminus First Nation does not have road safety plan. Yet the roads on the Reserves are unsafe: primarily two-lane roads with narrow to non-existent shoulders, many bordered by a steep embankment to water (Burleith Arm, Kulleet Bay, Salish Sea), or a steeply forested area. There are no sidewalks or dedicated pathways. Until recently there was no form of public transportation. Vehicle transportation is the members’ main mobility option to access community facilities and amenities, participate in sports and recreation programs, access health services, commute to jobs, or to visit friends and family.

This project will hire technical expertise to develop a community road safety plan. This plan will be consistent with the Vision Zero approach by considering increased safety for non-motorized modes, and a focus on both infrastructure and an awareness program to promote a community-wide culture of safety.
