Carrs Landing Road Pedestrian Improvement Project

Summary

The Carrs Landing Road Pedestrian Improvement Pilot Project aims to enhance pedestrian safety by installing pedestrian-activated LED flashing shared road signs at two high-traffic corners with sharp curves. Each corner will be equipped with two signs, positioned on both sides of the outside radius of the curve. The signs will feature a flashing W-132-2 symbol, accompanied by a yellow “Watch for Pedestrians” tab beneath it. These signs will only activate when a pedestrian is detected, providing advanced warning to motorists of pedestrians in the area, enabling them to exercise caution. This innovative approach seeks to improve safety for vulnerable road users in a rural corridor, addressing the unique challenges posed by the area’s pedestrian and traffic conditions.

Project Overview

Carrs Landing Road is a rural road that serves as the main route for the community of Carrs Landing. It is shared by many vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, but due to its rural design, there is limited space for them to move out of the travel lanes safely. Furthermore, a history of vehicles exceeding the speed limit on this road exacerbates the safety risks, as supported by speed data collected by the District of Lake Country.

The District of Lake Country has teamed up with SAFR (Safety Awareness Friends & Residents), a grassroots community group focused on promoting shared road safety and behavioral change among all road users. The District now has a unique opportunity to support SAFR’s campaign by implementing infrastructure improvements, such as the Carrs Landing Road Pedestrian Improvement Pilot Project. By installing pedestrian-activated flashing signage at the road’s low-visibility corners, this project will provide drivers with advanced warning of pedestrians before they are visibly seen. This will give motorists ample time to adjust and act accordingly, improving safety for everyone using the road.
