2025 Pedestrian Crossing Improvements

Summary

This project will upgrade existing crosswalks in the community with solar rectangular rapid flashing beacons to enhance pedestrian safety.

Project Overview

The City of Maple Ridge is upgrading 20 crosswalks across the community with solar rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) to enhance pedestrian safety. These improvements will provide highly visible user-activated flashing lights making crossings safer and more accessible for all users. Selected locations focus on schools to better protect children and caregivers walking to school, and in the City’s Town Centre to support pedestrian activity within the downtown area. These upgrades align with the City’s commitment to prioritizing road safety and improving walkability in neighborhoods.

Seven of the proposed locations are close to schools, specifically:

  • Alouette Elementary
  • Eric Langton Elementary
  • St. Patrick’s School
  • Harry Hooge Elementary
  • Alexander Robinson Elementary
  • Maple Ridge Secondary

This Vision Zero grant will support the City of Maple Ridge’s RRFB program, partnering to improve driver crosswalk yield compliance in the community to help make pedestrians safer.
