Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSIs) are textured ground surfaces that signal changes in the walking environment and potential hazards for pedestrians with visual or mobility impairments. Paired with high-visibility strips, they provide tactile and visual guidance while also alerting drivers to pedestrian crossings, thereby enhancing overall safety.

This Vision Zero grant directly supports the creation of safe environments and improves infrastructure for vulnerable road users particularly pedestrians with visual impairments or mobility challenges by funding the installation of TWSIs at two priority intersections.

The 119th Ave Accessibility Upgrades project will enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility by installing (TWSI) at sidewalk letdowns along a key corridor in Pitt Meadows. Public feedback highlighted accessibility concerns along 119th Avenue, particularly at sidewalk letdowns that currently lack tactile warning strips. This corridor is a key route for students attending two nearby elementary schools and is also heavily use by seniors and individuals with mobility and/or visual impairments. TWSIs will be installed at two intersections (119 Avenue & 193 Street and 119 Avenue & Blakely Road) identified as presenting navigational challenges for vision impaired pedestrians.

This initiative builds on the success of a 2023 Vision Zero project along Harris Road which focused on traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures. The City continues its Vision Zero commitments by addressing accessibility gaps and promoting equitable, inclusive road design.

The presence of tactile indicators increases safety, especially for visually impaired pedestrians who navigate using environmental cues. This project is further supported by community engagement efforts and alignment with the city’s accessibility and development standards. By addressing these concerns, this project supports efforts to create safer, more inclusive pedestrian environments in Pitt Meadows.
